Restoring a face brick facade by just changing its properties, not its appearance
Until a few years ago, the face brick facade was one of the most commonly used facades in Spanish construction.
But the passage of time is unforgiving, so it is now very common for people to look for different alternatives to restore older facades.
Once in place, we have two options: to continue using the same material and try to repair it as well as possible, or take the opportunity to improve the building envelope and restore the building to make it more energy-efficient.
Today I'd like to talk to you about a restoration project we carried out on the Gran Vía in Bilbao, north of Spain.
Let me explain the background:
it's a community of owners with 4 different properties, and there was some disagreement about the need to restore the facade. Two of the owners argued that it needed to be done due to condensation caused by the lack of insulation, while the others didn't believe it was necessary.
As things were, at department of Urbanism our advice was clear: if you can't come to an agreement, you can still carry out the restoration, but also maintain the original appearance of the outer cladding.
This is where our Stoneo material came into play.
The restored facade is NOT facing bricks
Our Stoneo panels enable you to create almost any kind of texture.
So, taking into account the importance of face brick facades in the past, we decided to include a face brick texture in our Stoneo Art range, with panels that have the appearance of bricks.
This is a way of replicating the brick aesthetic and is particularly useful for these types of restoration projects, where we are asked to maintain the same appearance.
For the balcony area, we used Pure texture panels with a stone appearance.
A combination of textures and colors to ensure that the new facade maintains the same appearance as before.
If you look at the photo accompanying this text, you'll see that the left side of the building has been left alone, while the right side has been restored.
As you can see, both buildings are still similar in appearance, both in terms of color and texture.
They look the same, right? Well, at a technical level there are some major differences.
Facade Cladding: the insulation makes the difference
The most important thing that sets apart facade cladding from face brick facades is its insulation capacity.
Ventilated Facade is currently considered the best solution for achieving optimum thermal and acoustic insulation in a building, eliminating both thermal bridges and condensation and damp problems. What makes this system effective is the fact that it creates a moving air chamber that provides continuous ventilation, keeping the insulation material constantly dry and improving its performance.
