ULMA facade on the most eco-friendly building in Breda

Right in the heart of Breda, a beautiful city in the Netherlands, a new icon has emerged: The city’s most eco-friendly building. We are talking about the new offices of BDO, a world leading professional services organization, and ULMA was involved in this ambitious project, providing the building envelope.
In terms of urban planning, the building designed by RIENKS Architects is consistent with the adjacent Princenhagelaan building and the Moore DRV offices, both designed by the same studio. The tone and the vertical rhythm of the facade show that both buildings belong to the same family (although one is on legs while the other is on solid ground).
Sustainability as a starting point
The premise of eco-friendly
From the very beginning, the design of this 2,550 m2 building has been guided by the principles of sustainability, achieving energy neutrality with a GPR score of 8.5. The choice of sustainable materials, such as the cross-laminated wood (CLT) for the structure, or the Stoneo panels for the construction of the facade cladding, was fundamental for reducing the carbon footprint.
The facade cladding system was designed to offer the perfect balance between functionality and aesthetics, significantly enhancing the building’s thermal and acoustic insulation. Thanks to its air chamber between the panel and the wall of the building, the facade cladding offers an improvement to energy efficiency while also protecting the structure from adverse weather and prolonging its service life.
This project is a groundbreaking advance in the design of sustainable workspaces, combining aesthetics, functionality and environmental protection.
Stoneo panels, sustainability and aesthetics
- Sustainable materials. Stoneo panels are a great environmentally friendly option since they are made primarily of natural aggregates (92%) and recycled components, and this in addition to the fact that the production process prioritizes reduction of CO2 emissions.
- Versatile aesthetic: The paper-like texture chosen for this project adds a contemporary and distinctive touch to the building. With Stoneo, architects have the freedom to choose from a wide range of finishes and colors, so they can adapt facades to the creative vision of each project.
- Durability and minimal maintenance: Stoneo is highly resistant to external factors such as humidity, sunlight and temperature changes as it absorbs practically zero water (0.1%). This results in facades that maintain their appearance and functionality for many years, with minimal maintenance.

A benchmark for the future
The BDO office building in Breda is notable not just for being the most sustainable building in the city, but also for serving as an example of how innovative solutions can be integrated to create inspiring spaces.
For architects seeking solutions that combine aesthetics, performance and sustainability, Stoneo facade cladding is the answer. On the one hand, the facade cladding building system offers thermal/acoustic efficiency and a fast and safe installation. In addition, on the other, the versatility of Stoneo gives the imagination free rein to create projects that stand out from the crowd.
